Garh Kalika

Garh Kalika

The Gadkalika Temple, located on the outskirts of Ujjain, is dedicated to Goddess Kalika. This sacred shrine is associated with a fascinating legend that attributes the great poet Kalidasa’s extraordinary poetic skills to his genuine devotion to Goddess Kalika. According to the lore, Kalidasa received his poetic boon from Maa Kalika at this temple.

The temple is adorned with the divine presence of Goddess Kalika, and her beautiful eyes are said to be a sight of joy for devotees. Although the present temple is not very old, it is believed to stand at the same site where an older temple once existed. During the 7th century, Harshavardhana renovated the temple, and later, the rulers of Gwalior rebuilt it to its former glory.

Archaeological excavations near the temple premises revealed bricks, a part of the plinth, and other sculptures associated with various historical periods. The Gadkalika Temple, with its rich history and connection to Kalidasa, remains a significant spiritual and cultural landmark in Ujjain, attracting devotees and visitors who seek divine blessings and wish to explore the city’s historical heritage.
